Well, it’s that time of year here in Arizona- Spring training, patio sitting, and weddings! If you are between your mid-twenties to early forties, chances are, you are attending at least one wedding this wedding season, either as a guest, part of the bridal party, or perhaps you are even the bride or groom. As planners, we have seen our fair share of weddings, so here are a few tips to help you survive weddings season while still keeping both a little green in your pocket and your dignity.
1. Gift giving. While it is generally expected to bring a gift to any wedding festivities (see more about when to give a gift here), keep in mind etiquette says you have up to 6 months or a year after the wedding to give a wedding gift. Don’t stress if you have three weddings in a row and those gifts are going to eat into your gas budget. It’s okay to spread out your gifts. Besides, who doesn’t love opening presents throughout the year? On the flip side, I also recommend hitting the registry early so that you have more options than just the $150 per place setting china.
2. Shoes. Ladies, unless you are some kind of masochist, there is no way your 4 inch heels are going to be comfortable all night. Do yourself a favor and pack a pair of dressy flats to change into once the dance party begins. Even if you have had enough drinks from the open bar to make being barefoot seem like a good idea, its always best to keep your soles covered. Besides, some venues are strict about guests keeping shoes on. Don’t let achey arches keep you from busting a move!
3. Drinks. An open bar is great, but keep it classy. Trust us, you don’t ever want to be the guest that is asked to leave by venue management for drunkenness You also don’t want to spend the latter half of the night hovering over the toilet. Save your shenanigans for the after party, where the bride and grooms grandparents will likely not be in attendance.
4. Travel. Headed to a destination wedding? Turn it into a vacation by taking a couple extra days to enjoy the area. During wedding season it can feel like you are spending all your vacation time and money on other people. Don’t forget to spend a little on yourself too!
5. Saying No. We live in a time where FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is rampant, but remember it’s okay to send your regrets. Don’t feel like you have to say yes to every invitation. It’s an honor to be a part of someone’s big day, but make sure you aren’t breaking the bank to attend your best friends, cousin’s, aunt’s wedding. Go to the events that are most meaningful to you.
